Social media doesn’t have to be overwhelming

Let’s debunk the myth that social media is complicated. Social media is actually really straight forward.

It’s about creating value and entertainment in exchange for attention and sales.

That’s the bit that makes us think it’s hard. Creating consistent content that you feel confident and comfortable making, that is also creating value and or is entertaining, or even God forbid, both!

For a start-up, this can feel super overwhelming, especially if you haven’t got a clear brand story and strategy. It seems like it takes forever to make and then you have to edit it or add hashtags and tag people and collaborate and you do all that and it takes you all freakin day and once it gets up there it gets one like from your Mum and that weird guy from school that seems to be stalking you.

Your post then proceeds to gets lost and you just want to give up anyway because everyone’s been doing this for years and it was much easier for them and their 50 000 followers thank you very much!

You then fling yourself on the sofa and proceed to binge-watch Netflix to overcome that you feel like a giant loser even though you know that that kind of self-talk will get you nowhere. This makes you feel worse and ungrateful, so you order a pizza, consume a tub of ice cream or your partner’s secret stash of m&ms, which makes you feel even more crap and for some reason you stay up till 2 am even though your kids get up at 5am.

Somehow you wake up and sit on the loo with your phone because you obviously need to check your status only to see a kid in Cuba doing exactly what you wanted to do on an old blackberry a tourist gave him and its only been liked 3 million times since yesterday. Meanwhile everyone’s talking about Tik Tok and you haven’t even got your head around snap chat yet!

After endless coffee’s and positive emojis and photos of impossibly gorgeous people in ridiculously gorgeous places, you hit a long and vulnerable post from your hairdresser, who is now a business coach, telling you how she got over everything you are currently going through by creating morning rituals after ditching her narcissistic ex who took all the money and now her and her 3 kids live in Barbados with her beautiful new man and she can help you do it too.

You remember that you had to get a new hairdresser because you just couldn’t cope with her whingeing and then lied about why you did that when you bumped into her at the supermarket.

You feel, bitter and twisted but then the next facebook ad is magically from and agency that promises to do it all for you.

Yes, you think, that’s the answer!

Then 3 months and $5000 later your feed looks gorgeous from all the ‘repurposed’ photos they “borrowed’ from other gorgeous and successful sites and your numbers look a bit better because they were way more consistent than you, but you are still only making the same amount of sales as before because your website was sh*t in the first place and you aren’t any more connected to what your customers.

Now you start up again on your own and try desperately not to end up on the sofa again.

You know that’s the definition of insanity right? Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. If that’s anything like your experience no wonder you’re thinking it’s hard and pointless. We feel you.

There are many things that are so great to delegate in business, but things around you and your story should be lead by you.

It’s your story.

You don’t have to push every button. Your team, if you have one can repurpose authentic content, but let’s help you put together a simple strategy for social media that works for you.

There are different stories for every business.

  1. There is you and why you do what you do.

  2. There is what you do/your product.

  3. There are other people wearing what you make.

  4. There are other people experiencing the results you got for them.

  5. There is you enjoying life.

  6. There is your behind the scenes life.

  7. There is something new is coming.

  8. There are endless combinations of the above.

Let’s look at a few examples.

Content Jam

  • There is our feeling which is confidence and connection.

  • There are Belle and me, our backstories, how we interact and why we do what we do.

  • There is what we actually do which is a lot more than just photography.

  • There are photos of us doing what we do interacting with clients

  • There are photos and stories of our fabulous clients.

  • There are things and people that inspire us.

  • There are our dreams and aspirations of where we want the business to go.

  • There is the reality of where we are, which is some of the more funny bits.

  • There are our family’s and children occasionally because we are Mums that just adore our kids.

  • There is the story about being women and mothers in business

  • There are stories about how our husbands love and support us and sometimes get grumpy that we spend so much time together (just kidding - this one gets left out)

  • There is the passion behind why we want to help you start and grow your business.

We can weave this braid of our story together to create our social media. We can add value and entertain. We can get to know you. We can form a relationship with you. If you like us and feel like you know and trust us you will give us your attention and at some point, you might want to work with us.

For the Day

  • There is the feeling of love, connection and romance.

  • There is the reason why we want to get married and celebrate that.

  • There is Jordonna and her story and why she lovingly does what she does.

  • There is the importance of sustainability.

  • There is the values of ethical fashion and suppliers.

  • There is the products themselves.

  • There is photos of people in beautiful outfits created by Jordanna.

  • There is the story of sourcing those and the fun and sometimes frustrating journey to that.

  • There is the story of being a working Mum with a gorgeous little girl under one.

  • There is all that gorgeous stuff that inspires her.

  • There is the story of starting up and juggling work and your side hustle and your baby and your partner.

  • There is the story of how insane corporate life is (just kidding- this one gets left out

  • There is the excitement of the journey.

  • There is the joy of being your own boss.

Us and the Earth.

  • There is the feeling of gratitude and appreciation of how small steps every day can change the world.

  • There is the story of Elizabeth and why she passionately does what she does.

  • There are tips on habits you can change to help the planet

  • There is hope and feel-good stories about what others are doing to help the earth.

  • There are recipes to inspire you

  • There are fun ways to store food you have never thought about.

  • There are plastic-free challenges you can join

  • There is the story of Elizabeth being an entrepreneur after divorce and redundancy.

  • There is the story of Elizabeth being a single Mum and wanting a better world for her daughter

  • There are stories what it’s like to date again at 47 (just kidding - this one gets left out)

  • There are pictures of the products.

  • There are tips on how to use the products.

  • There are pictures of people using the products.

  • There are stories of people using them and loving them and committing to more

  • There are beautiful pictures of the earth and why it’s important to make changes.

  • There are causes you can get involved in to make a bigger difference.

  • There is the joy of making a difference

I could literally go on forever to list the stories of all the clients we work with but I feel you get the point.

You don’t have to share everything but understanding the stories behind your work and why people want to know them is the basis of your strategy.

Showing up consistently weaving the braid of your stories is how you create a meaningful brand that you love to connect on social media.
